We went on our first family hike today. Oh hiking with littles....first it was packing the bag-diapers and snacks, then getting there-find a spot that you didn't have to hike forever just to get to the trailhead, then nurse Dempsey, hats on boys, Dempsey in the carrier. Boom. Ready. It's true that this will get easier the older they get. And at times it feels like it is way too much work to even bother. But then we reach the furthest point we are going (mind you we've already passed our lunch and our nap times) and I tell AJ "c'mon, it's time to go back now." And AJ stares me straight in the Eyes and tells me, "I'm not coming. I am climbing mountains." I get why we put in the extra work, because we are laying the foundation. We are teaching our family that this IS what we do. We hike. We get outside. We reconnect with nature. Even if it is near to impossible right now daggumit, we are out there!
I did finally convince AJ to come back down by telling him we will be going on many more hikes. And yes AJ, I will bring lunch with us next time so we don't has to leave to go get it.
And AJ told me, "Mom, you know how to catch up to Dad?" "How?" "Run as fast as you can!!!"
Then he proceeded to do just that....
Love,
Momma
